A thousand shiny buttons (& one lens cap)....

When I was a little girl, this big jar of buttons sat on a tiny table in the hallway of my grandmother's house in Houston. I loved it when she would carry it to the living room for me and dump them out on the rug. Back then, my two favorite buttons were these tiny red ones. Now I can't decide. I can't recall who started the button jar, probably my great-grandmother... but I'm not sure which one. Maybe my brother remembers. (He remembers everything!)

Yesterday, I emptied the button jar so I could wash it. I had a heck of a time getting them all back in there. It took me three tries. I put a few in... shook the jar... added a few more... shook the jar... you get the picture... until they all fit.

After I finished taking pictures, I couldn't seem to find the lens cap for my camera. I searched everywhere and finally found it. Can you guess where? Look carefully and you will see it... amidst the buttons.

Now, I get to dump them out again.

But that's okay.

I love the buttons!

  2. My friend, Judy, from Texas, said this (comments weren't working)... "Very Cool. I have two tins with buttons that my grandmother(s) collected. :) I inherited them because I sew... once in awhile, I try to use them on something I'm sewing. My grandmothers were very thrifty: they would clip the placket from worn-out clothing to keep the buttons."

  3. My Mother had a button jar too. She worked in a dress factory and would bring home such neat buttons that I used to play with too. I had forgotten about that button jar. Thanks for reminding me of this great memory. I wish I had those buttons now!

  4. That's great that you remember those two red buttons! Your buttons with the hiding lens cap makes me think of the Where's Waldo? books!

  5. Sounds like you had fun playing with those buttons! How lucky that you have that jar. Such a great keepsake of your Grandmother's. I've looked at that picture two times, and I can't find the lens cap. Now I have to go look again. This is fun!
    Happy REDnesday!

  10. My gram had a button jar that I LOVED to play with when I was young. She passed away when I was only 9 and I never knew what happened to the buttons. But now I have my own jar - and guess what...I still love to play with them!

    Thanks for sharing your buttons!
